I love bacon. I especially love a perfectly rendered bacon bit. Chonky bacon snacks, as they are fondly known in my kitchen. Bacon, specifically bacon bits, find themselves on many HIH ingredient lists, so here are my hints, tips, and tricks to the perfect bacon bits.
Bacon Bit Hints, Tips and Tricks
- Chop your bacon slices into uniform pieces before cooking, instead of after. The increased surface area will expose more fat to heat and allow your bits to render more evenly.
- Start with a cold pan and keep the heat at medium low. The low heat will evenly and slowly render out the fat without burning your bacon bits.
- Keep your bacon bits moving. As the fat renders out, more of the hot fat will come into contact with the surface area of your bacon bits.
- Be patient, but don’t take your eye off your bacon bits, they can go from perfect chonky bacon snacks to burnt to a crisp in a matter of minutes.
- If a recipe calls for 1 cup of bacon bits, cook 2. In my experience, at least 1/2 of your bacon will be consumed through snacking before it gets used for it’s intended application.

Enjoy!
XOXO,
Alden
